When we heard that a new “straight-friendly” bar was opening in Gayxample by none other than the super duo behind the successful cafe Federal and candy store Papabubble, we had to check it out. Specifically targeted as an after-work bar, we were keen to see what all the fuss was about, particularly after it’s busy inauguration. Upon entry, you know you are entering a different world with the creative retro sports theme used throughout the space – with the ping pong rackets decorating the walls and skipping ropes draped opposite the bar.

There are fun elements such as the pool like toilets, which are blue tiled and has captions such as “no running” – a reminder that you are to behave. In the men’s section there is a mirrored panel beneath the urinal, adding some naughty humor, it is Gayxample after all. The same inside-out concept that worked successfully in Federal is also evident in this bar with the terrace incorporating elements of outside, such as the paved flooring, concrete door frame and outdoor chairs but you are in fact at the entrance of the bar. This makes an ideal smoking area without being forced on to the streets.

Here you can tuck in to tasty dishes with the guys serving a selection of plates from their cosy tuck shop. We recommend the Za’tar dip con murhamma and the pepperoni pizzettes de Za’tar – a pleasant surprise and complemented well with a few glasses of eco wine. So if you like friendly service, great atmosphere and delicious bites, we would say to pop in to Mat Bar.
