Whether you are planning on coming over for the festivals, want to find out vegan eats or general insider information, we will keep you in the loop.
Barcelona Insider : The Diary of a Cake Maker
If you follow us on Facebook, you may have noticed that we have somewhat of a sweet tooth. So we decided to get to know Helen Vass, a Scottish baker (who has been baking since the age of ten) based here in Barcelona who offers cooking classes in both Spanish and English. She is the infamous character behind popular food websites The Diary of a Cake Maker, a must when you are in need of a good cake recipe and for inspiration. Read the interview below to find out her favorite haunts.
What is your favorite postre?
I love loads of puddings, but nothing beats a chocolate fondant with some home made vanilla ice cream.
Where’s your favorite cafe in Barcelona?
At the moment, my favourite café is Pudding on Carrer Pau Claris 90. It’s like walking into the set of Alice in Wonderland!
Best place to have a drink after work?
I have a few places I like to visit. For a nice drink on a roof terrace, I love the Claris Hotel on Carrer Pau Claris 150. However this option is only viable in the summer months! For a good gin and tonic head to Ubeda on Carrer Còrsega 339. If you want a nice glass of wine, head to Clos Mont Blanc on Carrer Pau Claris 169. All the wines they serve are D.O Conca de Barbera and they do live music on Friday nights which is great.
Where is the most inspiring place in Barcelona?
One place where I feel very inspired is when I am sitting on Passeig de Gracia on one of the benches, just watching the world go by.
Favorite place for tapas?
One of my favourite places for tapas is Flauta on Carrer Aribau 23. They do great things but make sure you go early as there is always a queue to get in which is a good sign!!!
Where is the best place to go shopping for cake ingredients?
My favourite place is the British shop, A Taste of Home on Carrer Floridablanca 78. They sell all the British baking ingredients which I rely on.
Where is the best place to beach?
The best beach for me has to be Garraf, a 30 minute train ride from Sants. It feels as if you are in the Costa Brava when you are there.
What is your favorite building in Barcelona?
One of my favourite buildings has to be La Pedrera. A fine example of Gaudi’s architecture.
If you are heading to the city and looking for central Barcelona apartments, DestinationBCN offer a variety of self-catering apartments.
We are happy to supply Helen with all her baking ingredients from A taste of Home. Please visit us we have so much more from Basics to luxury goods and lots of great Christmas goods and Books for Children and Adults.
