World Press Photo 2012 – Emotional exhibition
World Press Photo is one of the most established and prestigious photojournalism competitions in the world. Think – 156 award winning photos, eight cities of forty countries and I think you can understand the depth that much more. The exhibition is on in Barcelona at the CCCB until 6th January and is a sure hit in the city, last year saw 35,159 visitors attend.
Why so popular? Well, unlike other competitions this one allows journalists to exhibit pictures without censorship, giving photojournalists a real opportunity to portray the raw edge, sensitivity and trauma that otherwise may not be possible.
This year’s winning photo is by Catalan Samuel Aranda. The image is of a mother holding her injured son suffering from the effect of tear gas in Yemen taken for The New York Times and is noted as being similar to to La Pietà of Michelangelo.

[…] screams out one thing for us and that is World Press Photo. If you visited last year you would have seen the ever-changing and dark times of society through evocative photojournalism […]
