Best picnic spots in Barcelona

This may come as a surprise but there are people that don’t enjoy beach culture. For those that aren’t fond of relaxing on the sand with a sea view, there is of course the park. Barcelona hosts some hidden, quiet, fun and child-friendly parks that are suitable for you to get that picnic blanket out, play a game of bat and ball and and feast like crazy whilst enjoying the company of family or friends. In this post we share some of the nicest spots perfect for a slice of tortilla and pan con tomate.

Parc del Laberint d’Horta
This park is beautifully set behind the historical palace of the Dukes of Llupiá, which means one thing, sheer neo-classicism and utopia. All the way up by Horta, it may be a little out of the way but if you want to relax in a luscious green setting, look no further. There are mazes, wonderful scenic surprises for you to roll out your picnic blanket and relax. You will find designated picnic tables but they are at the front are a little busy and the view isn’t as nice as that of the gardens.

El Parc de Joan Miró
When looking at this calm and serene park, it is hard to imagine that it was once a slaughterhouse. The staggering “Dona I Ocell” (woman and bird), donated to the city of Barcelona by Joan Miró himself, stands as a colorful emblem of the city if you like  amongst the pine trees and green landscape. Located adjacent to the new Las Arenas shopping mall in Plaça Espanya, spanning across 4 city blocks, it makes a nice pit stop when you need to escape the bustle. The lower level is landscaped with pine, palm, and fragrant eucalyptus trees and colorful flowers, especially during the spring and summer months. The upper level is paved and gives precedence to the monumental sculpture.

Jardins del Palau de Pedralbes
This is a stately luscious green park features entwined arches, romantic bridges and English and French influences throughout. Safely guarded behind verdant tall walls, shady lanes, ponds, small waterfalls and stone crushed footpaths lined with benches, there are plenty of little nooks for you to enjoy in this welcoming park. It is no wander that events take place throughout the year, with last year hosting 080 Barcelona fashion week. A nice spot to relax is where the palace is, which is beautifully centred around an oval pond and sculpture.

Parc Güell
Another one of Antoni Gaudí’s treasures, statuesque figures, fairytale figures and incredible architecture unifies and takes full form in this magnitude of a park. It makes the ideal resting ground for a picnic, particularly if you hiked around it before stopping for lunch. Picnic benches can be found not far from Gaudí’s former home, however you can easily settle somewhere else around the park. You will often hear music from local performers chiming in the background whilst there. What also makes this an ideal for a picnic, is that there are lots of shady spaces for you to take cover from the beaming sun during peak hours.

Parc de la Ciutadella
If you aren’t sensitive to noise, this is a central park to picnic in. Lots of tourists and locals frequent this space, which has an ornate umbracle at the entrance, lake and an impressive fountain designed by Josep Fontserè. You will find lots of dog walkers, wannabe singers, acrobats and tap dancers around this park. If you manage to find a space to sit, you are lucky – like I said, it gets busy. there are however, nice gardens towards the rear of the park adjacent to the zoo, which tends to be more quiet. Missing a few treats from your picnic hamper? There is a stand where you can purchase a few things in a couple of places in the park.
