Metamorphosis – explore a fantastical and animated world
Metamorphosis is an exhibition that showcases the works of four key figures in the field of animated films: Ladislas Starewitch (1882-1965), Jan Švankmajer (1934), and the Quay Brothers (1947). Between them they boast filmographies that unlock eccentricities, surrealism, innocence and manage to blend the magical with madness and evil. Their work not only reflects a trouble existence but awkwardness and what some would argue to be ugly in a contradictory world.
The exhibition also presents an array of artistic and cinematographic referential points which revert to the elements that triggered their initial inspirations, this includes: fairytales, horror stories, the world of dreams, pre-Enlightenment science and illusionism. It is the first time that this them has been explored and presented in an exhibition in Spain and the backgrounds of the artists makes it a very international event, with Starewitch being Polish (born in Russia) but settled in Paris, Czech pioneer Švankmajer, and the Quay brothers were born in Pennsylvania but have lived in London for the past thirty years. Visit if you like to explore dark depths of imagination and a magical and poetic play on what lies beneath. Exhibition starts on the 26th March, save the date!
