Barcelona Blog

It can all be a little overwhelming, the city may not be huge but the culture, activities, events, eateries etc. is vast. So we have taken it upon ourselves to amalgamate our local 12 years experience in the city via our blog. Whether you are planning on coming over for the festivals, want to find out vegan eats or general insider information, we will keep you in the loop.

Els Sortidors dels Parlament

Els Sortidors dels Parlament

Sant Antoni continues to be one of the top places to hang out, have a spot of lunch, brunch and more. Federal Cafe, Tarannà, Café Cometa and Ido DO Balear are just some of the reasons why people head over to this part of town. Els Sortidors del Parlament has been on our restaurant list for sometime, they offer a sublime selection of good tapas and it has an authentic rustic establishment, with exposed brick wall, wines on the shelves, and barrels for you to stand around or sit by to have a glass of vermut and a tapa.

Plom Gallery – an art gallery for children

We just love an art gallery and Barcelona seems to be filled with plenty of independent and small gallery spaces in every nook the city seems to have. Plom gallery is one of the latest additions to the others that reside on Carrer Sèneca in the Gràcia neighbourhood, with a focus on introducing art to children.  They sell original and limited edition paintings, and some impressive colourful illustrations.

Exhibition ‘La estética del dolor’ opens today at La Tache Gallery, gathering works from Berlin-based artist Vermibus. Diverse materials and advertising posters are intermixed – taken from his most recent project Dissolving Europe, to create a different perspective on society as it is today and highlighting the manipulation of advertising.

L’Eggs – the perfect place for egg lovers

Eggs – we all know they are full of protein, are a key ingredient when it comes to a cooked breakfast and can be cooked in lots of different methods. Chicken eggs are the most popular, however you will find small gourmet quail eggs used in tapas dishes. It is interesting then, that Barcelona is now home to the first eggs restaurant L’Eggs, which is dedicated to a variety of dishes but mostly consisting of this dairy product. Why is it making a buzz? Well chef Paco Perez, famous for his avant-garde cooking style, is behind the concept.

Explore Barcelona by bike

One of the most popular ways to see the city is by bike, not only is it more personal and fit but it is a great way to disperse yourself in to the city. You will see many residents here using the red bicing bikes, unfortuantely these bikes are for residents only but the city does have many companies that offer bike rentals to tourists and reasonable prices. We have taken the time to list some of our favorites.

Plaça Sant Felip Neri – romantic square with a tragic tale

Barcelona is renown for it’s beautiful plazas (squares), with that of Plaça Reial lilted with palm trees and modernist architecture and the bohemian style at Plaça del Sol in Gracia . Though it must be said that the tragic tale that rests at the pretty and quaint Plaça Sant Felip Neri is one that makes it a must visit.

After-work drinks at Mat Bar Barcelona

When we heard that a new “straight-friendly” bar was opening in Gayxample by none other than the super duo behind the successful cafe Federal and candy store Papabubble, we had to check it out. Specifically targeted as an after-work bar, we were keen to see what all the fuss was about, particularly after it’s busy inauguration. Upon entry, you know you are entering a different world with the creative retro sports theme used throughout the space – with the ping pong rackets decorating the walls and skipping ropes draped opposite the bar.

Ottimo Gelats – Natural ice cream in Barcelona

The last week has seen a series of reports regarding the soaring weather temperatures across Spain. It is then no surprise to see the rise of “heladerias” open for the summer and making money at a crazy rate. Ice-cream brings back those lovely childhood memories, that urge to choose your favorite flavors and take a seat in the park or beach disconnected from the rest of the world.

The Openhouse Project – There’s no place like home

We are all familiar with the famous phrase, “mi casa es tu casa” and we had the opportunity to experience this recently whilst attending the Openhouse gallery. Now, we are huge fans of the design concept store based in Calle Notariat, which is unfortunately closing soon and re-emerging as a different entity, but are happy that the company has extended to The Openhouse Project where  Andrew TrotterMari Luz Vidal and Nobu Kawagoe house private galleries and dining experiences in their very own home. The project is a growing one, experimenting with opening their home to the public, “our home is open to all”.

Souvenir : A photographic exhibition by Martin Parr

It is amusing living in a city like Barcelona, famous for it’s influx of tourism, just how quick it is to identify a tourist or as they say here “guiri”. This has taken the form of incessant bloggers, travel enthusiasts and amateur photographers out and about with the latest Canon camera, fixated on capturing every single moment. The digital age with its social media and fascination with sharing in real time, has transformed the world of capturing the moment – which makes it even easier to identify the tourist.  One has to then consider, just how much time is actually lost in the grand mission of collecting.
