Grand opening: New Apple store in Barcelona

Tomorrow sees the inauguration of the highly anticipated new Apple store in Plaça de Catalunya, Barcelona. The building that Apple will occupy, based on Passeig de Gracia, was formerly the headquarters of illegal communist organization Partit Socialista Unificat de Catalunya during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930′s.

One of a kind – Mutt Bookshop and Art Gallery Barcelona

MUTT Bookshop & Art Gallery was opened in late 2010 by Juanjo Fernandes, an active and well connected individual that wanted to offer more than books. Located in El Born neighborhood – the store is innovative and inspiring with art work beautifully mounted on the walls with a variety of  literature dedicated to art, design and urban art decorating the space and presented as art itself. The balance between art, social and education is what makes this place an incredible hub for the creative types.

If like us you have a penchant for Nordic design, Estilo Nordico the distributor for Nordic interior brands, has a small furniture and decoration store that you must visit. Celia Vela at 080 Barcelona Fashion

We had the pleasure of attending the Celia Vela show “…y un vestido esmeralda”, at 080 Barcelona yesterday – one of the key fashion events in Barcelona, showcasing some of the best design talent in the city. This edition was superbly staged at Palau de Pedralbes and served as a magical backdrop for the catwalk that was centered around the fountain. The marquees were brimmed with Catalan press, the fashion pack and up and coming designers so the musing around the gardens was of course inspirational.

Brick Lane BCN – Vintage mecca in Barcelona

If you are like the girls in our office and have a soft spot for vintage finds you will love Brick Lane BCN - a pop up vintage market that takes place every month at different locations throughout the city under the premise that it brings the vibe of London to Barcelona.

Krystal-Joy is behind the concept, originally born in London this is a woman that isn’t shy when it comes to fashion. With extensive experience in the fashion industry that spans from working in the vintage department of Topshop, styling and producing fashion shows for the likes of Julien MacDonald and Temperly, Krystal-Joy noticed that Barcelona was missing cool, affordable vintage for both men and women like other European cities and created Brick Lane BCN.

“We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us” – Number 3 exhibition

This weekend I decided to pop in to Palau de la Virreina where I was pleasantly surprised with the current exhibition Number Three – an adaptation of Jean-Luc Godards Numéro deux (1975) but in exhibition form. For those that aren’t familiar with the film, it explores the key interlacing between the work place and domestic environment. Titled “from home to factory”, one could question if home is indeed the factory or if the factory is home. The film is randomized with breaks and loops, the editing is sharp at times and disconcerting – reflective of the questionable repressive spaces.

Grec Festival 2012 – The open air tradition continues

The Grec Festival of Barcelona is one of the most important cultural events in Europe, and definitely the most exciting summer cultural event in BCN, with theatre, dance, music, circus and other stage arts.

The Teatre Grec (Greek Theatre in Castilian), Barcelona (Spain), is an outdoor theater located on the mountain of Montjuïc. Despite its name, is not a construction made by the ancient Greeks. It was designed and constructed in 1929 for the International Exposition in Barcelona by architect Ramon Nicolau Maria Rubio Reventós and i Tudurí, which was inspired by the floor of the theater of Epidaurus. It was located in an old quarry in the mountains and served as the theater space

Cup&Cake Barcelona: cupcakes with a little something special

There is something to be said about cupcakes, most commonly associated with New Yorkers, after the famous sitcom Sex and the City glamorized Bleecker Street’s Magnolia’s Bakery. Then there is London, which hosts the ever so popular Hummingbird bakery and for those that might not know, Barcelona has its very own haunt for cupcake junkies in the name of Cup and Cake Barcelona. Here at DestinationBCN we consider this little haven to be a cute place with that something special.
