About the area: Barrio Gotico and the central area
Carabassa is centrally located in the Medieval area of town, a Roman settlement during the Augustus empire (27 to 14 B.C) which is now known as Barri Gotic or Barrio Gotico (the Gothic neighbourhood) in Castilian. The serene and winding streets of this area conceal unique antique shops, traditional cafés and family-run restaurants, all waiting to be discovered a mere stone's throw from the apartment.
Notable historic monuments include the Church of our Lady Mercè, the Cathedral La Seu with its lively plaça, and Barcelona's oldest neighbourhood, the forgotten Jewish quarter "Del Call," all of which combine to create a rich and varied architectural tapestry.
Another nearby neighourhood, Barceloneta, is home to a bounty of delicious fresh seafood restaurants and is ideal for an afternoon stroll along the beach, whilst the stylish Born district offers fashionable shopping, fine restaurants and hip bars for late nights out.
Other excellent areas for shopping include the high-streets of Porta Del Angel, calle Avinyo and Maremagnum shopping centre, not to mention the vast array of entertainers and street vendors on Barcelona's most famous street, La Rambla, with its world-famous food market, La Boqueria.
The city's well-connected metro system also offers easy and safe access to any other destination safely and securely from both La Rambla (Liceu) and the Born area (Jaume I), whilst there are several bus stops nearby and a taxi stand on Via Laietana.
