The Mallorca penthouse is situated between two of the most emblematic streets of Barcelona - Passeig de Gracia and the Rambla de Catalunya in the heart of the elegant Eixample area.
Laid out during the 19th and early 20th century, the entire district of Eixample is testament to the genius of modernist architects like Antoní Gaudi, Enric Sagnier and Doménech I Muntaner. Just around the corner of the apartment, you'll find La Pedrera, one of Gaudi's most famous works of art.
A stroll down Passeig de Gracia leads you to the block called Illa de la Discórdia, which showcases distinct architectural jewels by three of the most eminent architects of the time. The street is also, now, equally famed for a series of glittering stores by leading fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Loewe, Chanel and Yves Saint-Laurent.
Rambla de Catalunya is a gracious, tree-lined quasi-pedestrian street filled with smaller boutiques and restaurants. Besides shops and restaurants, the area also houses the largest concentration of private art galleries and, a few blocks down from the apartment, on Carrer Arago, the spectacular Fundació Antoni Tápies.
In only a 10 to 15-minute walk from the Mallorca apartment, you'll reach Placa Catalunya, the colourful Ramblas and Europe's largest covered market, El Mercat de la Boqueria.
Take a left off the Ramblas and you are in the Barrio Gotico, the historic center of Barcelona, comprising a mesmerizing web of alleys in the heart of which is situated the La Seu cathedral. To the right of the Ramblas lies the Raval, which houses the modern art museum MACBA and the newly-restored Palau Güell.
If you head west from the apartment, the first sign that you are approaching the neighbourhood of Gracia is the astounding modernist Casa Fuster, just beyond the upper limit of the Passeig de Gracia. Visiting Gracia is like entering a different city altogether. Off the tourist track, it is best-known for its charming squares, serene atmosphere and lively bar culture. Make sure to stop by the Plaça Vila de Gracia, marked by its clock tower and robin's egg blue town hall, and plentiful cafes and bars.
As locals we regularly eat out in the city, so we thought we'd share our list of bars, cafes and restaurants. We have visited them all! Download list.
